Search For A Bridgegate Smoking Gun

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Yesterday the legislative committee investigating bridgegate held a behind-closed-doors executive session in which new motions emerged dealing with former Christie Campaign Manager Bill Stepien and former Chief of Staff Bridget Kelly. Both have pleaded the fifth in response to the legislative committee’s subpoenas.

Now, the committee has decided to reject their subpoena objections and instead the special council has now set a new date by which Kelly and Stepien must abide by the subpoenas and hand over any requested documentation and devices.

The vote for this new deadline was split along party lines. The four Republicans in the committee were against setting a new date, while the Democrats voted yes.

Assemblywoman Holly Schepisi discussed how the Republicans felt that they needed more time to review all of the documentation before moving ahead with the new deadline and that their abstention was not politically motivated.

“It was really just a function as to not having had the documents prior to walking into that room,” she confirmed.

Assemblyman John Wisniewski also spoke about the committee’s latest move in the whole bridgegate scandal.

“We’re gonna wait until all of the documents are served and then we will fill you in on who got served for what, but we’re certainly not going to announce the service of process today in this press conference,” he said.

At this time there are two ongoing investigations into the bridgegate debacle, one by the U.S. Attorney’s Office as well as one by this legislative committee. Wisniewski confirmed that both investigations are parallel and that the committee is more concerned with seeing how the Port Authority is run and how to fix it, while the U.S. Attorney’s Office is looking into any criminal wrongdoing.

This ongoing mess has many people coming out of the woodwork to take pokes at Governor Christie. 20 year resident of Fort Lee, Valerie Howard-Fadul, has suffered with an eye debilitating disease for the last 15 years that requires her take occasional trips to see doctors in Manhattan in order to get injections.

She spoke about how the traffic she endured the day of the lane closures didn’t help her condition.

“After leaving from having the injection in my eye and not having any medication and being stuck in that traffic, I just took it as one of those situations, and then only to find out a few months ago that that was deliberately done is really quite unfair,” she said.

Howard-Fadul has also joined a petition that now has over 13,000 signatures calling for Governor Christie’s resignation in the wake of this scandal.
