The 4-1-1 On 2-1-1

Posted: Updated:
Whippany, New Jersey (My9NJ) - If you want the 4-1-1 in New Jersey then you have to call 2-1-1.

Yesterday was National 2-1-1 Day. So what exactly is 2-1-1? It is a help line for human services. They deal with things like paying for electrical bills, finding food banks, disaster help, and offer a substance abuse hotline.

New Jersey’s call center is located in Whippany where trained operators help more than 7,000 people daily.

Laura Marx is the Executive Director of NJ 2-1-1. She said 2-1-1 has been in service for 8 years and their main goal is to connect those in need with services and assistance in the most efficient way possible.

“2-1-1 is a health and human resources telephone number, you can dial it from any phone, and we help people with health and human service information like rental assistance, utility assistance, looking for food, just the very basic things,” Marx said.

New Jersey’s 2-1-1 handles roughly 200,000 calls annually and a recent partnership with the New Jersey government enables them to utilize the data that they are collecting to help human services agencies improve.
