Tim Skubick: Schauer, Peters choose to appear with President Obama

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

For the past couple of weeks, the GOP propaganda machine has been grinding out one release after another suggesting Democrats Mark Schauer and Gary Peters were afraid to show their faces when President Barack Obama showed his at MSU last week.

Mark Schauer has yet to confirm he will be there, one release reported.

The GOP logic goes like this: Since the president is in trouble on Obamacare and since Mssrgs. Schauer and Peters voted for the darn thing, therefore they would not risk being within twenty miles of their president.

Well the president arrived and by golly so did the candidate for governor and U.S. Senate.

And then to prove that there was no pleasing the other party, the GOP fired off another release this time chastising  both of them for...what else?  Showing-up.

In a breathless release Chairperson Bobby Schostak lamented that, "By standing with the President today, Gary Peters and Mark Schauer decided they care more about publicity for their lackluster campaigns than the hundreds of thousands of Michigan families who lost their health care plans…."

And if they had been no shows the release would have said, Peters and Schauer chickened-out and abandoned their own president for fear it would cost them votes in November.

In case you need a road map, the R's have research that suggests so many folks are unhappy with Obamacare that linking it to other Democrats could pay off big time for the GOP.

Even the White House knows this.  Some Congressional Democrats would be mighty pleased if the President stayed out of their districts during their re-election bids.

But there were Mr. S and Mr. P.  feverishly working the MSU crowd as they awaited the President to sign the farm bill.

On the GOP notion that they were afraid to show their mugs in the same room with you-know-who, Mr. Schauer says that defies reality and Mr. Peters says if the president comes back again, he'll be there.

So if they had any reservations about the risk, they didn't show it and they even got a shout out from the President who called them by name but did not mention they were running for office.

After all this was billed as a non-political trip to Moo-U.
