One million condoms donated to Dallas by AIDS organization

Posted: Updated:

Dallas city and county leaders are promoting safer sex through a special donation of one million condoms.

Dallas City Council member Dwayne Caraway held a fist full of condoms at one point during a City Hall event Thursday raising awareness about condom usage and safer sex.

The one million condoms were donated to Dallas County Health and Human Services by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

The city and county plan to distribute the condoms for free with an emphasis on areas of Dallas the health department calls "high risk" for HIV infections.

"The reasons that we're seeing this increase in number of HIV infections is number 1, lack of education, and number 2, individuals engaging in unprotected sex and that is an issue," said Dallas County Health and Human Services Director Zach Thompson.

Global AIDS organizations annually call Feb. 13 International Condom Day.
