Woman gets prison in fatal Arizona bus stop crash

Posted: Updated:

A woman who crashed into a bus stop and killed a 50 year-old man was sentenced to 8 years in prison Friday. That man's family say a video shown in court Friday said that after 8 years the sentence isn't enough.

The video shows the victim walking to the bus stop near I-17 and Indian School road moments later the car comes right at him.

"She didn't even hit the brakes, he didn't even stand a chance... She hit him and he didn't even see it coming," said Harry Cleveland Jr.

50 year old Harry Cleveland died back on May 13th, 2013. Another man was injured and police say 23 year old Elsa Olivares was behind the wheel

The video showed Olivares looking at the damage and then she took off. Soon after she turned herself into police and admitted to drinking as part of a plea deal. On Friday she was sentenced to 8 years in prison and 4 years probation.

"It was a slap in the face to the family. I don't think it was fair. For her to jump out of the car and run and leave him there to die, he would probably be here today is she had stayed and called for emergency," said Vincent Garrett.

"We value our lives, we shouldn't have to look over out shoulder going to a bus stop and expect to get his by a car going lord knows how many miles per hour," said Stephanie Jackson.

In court, we learned that Olivares was driving so fast because she was upset with her mother who was watching her kids while she was out till nearly 4 in the morning.

"there is no, no winning. We are all losing in this matter... I hope she can change her life in these 8 years, it is not going to bring my dad back," said Harry.

Oliveras was given credit for time served, she'll she spend 7 years and a little more than 3 months in prison.
