Wayne. Co's budget proposes slashed funding for rape kits

Wayne County's deficit elimination plan has been revealed, and some are outraged to see funding for rape kits and the prosecution of the crime among items proposed to be slashed from the budget.

The proposed plan involves cutting close to 200 million dollars, of that is about one million dollars being cut from the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. Kym Worthy at a press conference earlier in the week talked about her staff, or lack there of, and she now stands to loose seven more.

Worthy and her office have been working hard to offset previous cuts through grants, but the cuts seem to keep coming.

The Detroit Crime Commission is among the groups trying to help out. They've been raising  money for the office's Rape Kits Initiative after more than 11,000 kits dating back some 25 years were recently found at a Detroit Police Department's storage facility.

"You can't ignore this. You can't sweep it under the rug. As I said, you can't put it in a cupboard somewhere and say, okay, we're going to start over now," says Andrew Arena, Executive Director of Detroit Crime Commission.
 
Arena believes rape kits are a valuable tool to track down sex offenders and convict them.
 
"[It's] a mind boggling position to me that you are not going to fund something like this. It has to be funded, and if the way to do it is privately, then that's where we'll step in and do everything we can," Arena tells FOX 2's Robin Murdoch.
 
The Wayne County's elimination plan still needs to be approved. The Wayne County Commission is set to discuss it at its next meeting set for Wednesday at 1 p.m.
