DJs suspended over homophobic parent hoax

Posted: Updated:

Two Long Island radio personalities have been suspended over an on-air hoax about a homophobic parent.

David Widmer, general manager of Connoisseur Media Long Island, the station's owner says that Steve Harper and Leeana Karlson of Farmingdale's WKJY/93.3 FM were suspended this weekend.

“I sincerely apologize for the actions of Steve and Leeana, their insensitivity to the hurt it may have caused anyone, and for the breach of trust these actions have caused”, said Widmer in a post on the station's Facebook page.

He says the station is dealing with various community groups and gay rights organizations about the incident, but said that Harper and Karlson were supportive of same-sex marriage.

On Wednesday, the two hosts of The K98.3 Morning Show aired a fake story about a girl’s birthday party and one parent’s objection to the same-sex situation of that girl’s parents.

After this aired, it was brought to K-98.3 management’s attention that all the details of the story were completely fabricated

Harper and Karlson posted remarks on the station's website Monday, saying the story was fictitious and apologizing for the stunt.

“We applaud the quick and decisive actions from the management team at K-98.3 FM," said David Kilmnick, Chief Executive Officer, Long Island GLBT Services Network in a release.

The giant African snail damages buildings, destroys crops and can cause meningitis in humans. But some people still want to collect, and even eat, the slimy invaders. The Agriculture Department is trying to stop them. Since June, department authorities have seized more than 1,200 live specimens of the large snails, all of them traced back to someone in Georgia who was selling them illegally.

The rip current risk remains high along the New Jersey and New York coastlines. Some beaches were open to the public but closed to swimmers. The National Weather Service issued a High Surf Advisory and Rip Current Statement for the area beaches because of the effects of Hurricane Cristobal, which is expected to track south and east of the Jersey shore through Thursday.
