Flooding becomes a concern as Chicago thaws out

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The pooling water from melting snow is a big concern for some Chicagoans.

In Chicago's Hegwisch neighborhood, homeowners Donna Obszanski and Dana Buis had dug and cleared snow from the curb in front of their homes because they want the melting mess to drain into the sewers.

"If the sewers are open, [the water goes] down the sewers. If not, we flood, and we flood all the time over here. It's not uncommon," Obszanski said.

Obszanski even dug a trench from her neighbor's driveway to hers to make sure the water had a clear path to the sewer.

As the snow melts, it's made it challenging for people to navigate across some streets because of puddles building up all over the place.

Water Department crews have been working in areas around the city to clear snow covered sewer drains, and make sure they aren't filled with leaves and other sludge clogging the pipes.

"So what we're doing is we have our crews working, they're going around checking the catch basins to make sure that they're clean, and we're asking residents to give us a hand with this," said Deputy Commissioner Dwayne Hightower.

Buis said she's been doing her part after every snowfall.

"My dad always did it so I knew just to keep up on it. With the weather warming up, I don't want it flooded, cause then it will end up in everyone's basement and I don't want that, Buis said.

These neighbors wish more people would follow their example.

"It would make life a little easier, and less flooding on the street for us, but not everybody wants to come out and do this," said Obszanski.

Unfortunately, the melting snow problem is only going to get worse over the next two days.
