NJ Salt Shortage

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) - The constant pattern of snowfall in New Jersey is taking a toll on the states winter weather resources. The New Jersey Department of Transportation says that they only have enough salt for one more snow storm.

Assemblyman Jon Bramnick discussed how there was a huge salt shipment within our reach, but government regulations are leaving us out in the cold.

“There was 40-thousand tons of salt in a port in Maine, and there was a ship within feet of the 40-thousand tons. The only reason it didn’t get here is because the federal government wouldn’t permit a waiver under the Jones Act because it was a ship with a foreign flag. Meaning, it was not a United States vessel,” he explained.

Residents need to be weary of local store advertisements that claim they have salt for sale. Rock salt and table salt are not the same and are not recommended for use on ice.

“The fact that you have some salt from CVS or from the Foodtown, I don’t really think that’s solving the problem,” Bramnick said.

Luckily for New Jerseyans, a barge has been sent out to sea to bring back this salt, but it’s not going to happen overnight and the barge can only carry about 10,000 tons.

This winter alone, the NJDOT has already used 370,000 tons of salt on the roads to keep drivers safe. So the question remains, can the Garden State handle another storm?
