New poll shows majority of voters favor legalization in Maricopa County

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Arizona voters have already approved medical marijuana use in the state and a new poll suggests voters may be ready to legalize pot for recreational use.

This poll comes as there is a grassroots push to get this issue on the ballot in the November election.

"We have seen a huge change in our society in the way that we are thinking about it because we look at Colorado and we see the success that they are having and the tax revenue. I question why we don't have the same freedoms as the citizens of Colorado. Why are state and local law enforcement officers making one in 20 arrests for marijuana possession in Arizona. We are having 18,000 people being arrested for felony charges every year," said Dennis Bohlke with Safer Arizona.

"First and foremost think of our kids. That is what is at stake here. 32,000 kids say they would be more likely to try marijuana if it is legalized. Think about those kids think about their future and how this could impact them. Think about the people that are driving on the road. Do you want more high drivers as you are driving down the road? what about people at work? what about people showing up at work high on marijuana? is that the kind of community you want to live in?," said Shelly Mowrey, with the group Marijuana Harmless? Think again".

Another interesting number out of that poll in Maricopa County, 52-percent of voters support legalization and 40 percent do not.
