Security cameras installed in Borough Park

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Above Coney Island Avenue and Avenue J in Borough Park, a surveillance video camera now silently watches over the primarily Orthodox Jewish community. It is part of what will be a taxpayer-funded 80-camera surveillance system obtained for Borough Park by its assemblyman, Dov Hikind.

This video surveillance network system is called the Leiby Kletzky Security Initiative. Kletzky was the 8-year-old boy brutally dismembered three years ago by Levi Aron, who was arrested after a private video camera showed him leading the lost boy away before murdering him.

Once in place, the 80 cameras will only be monitored by New York City police and not the Shomrim patrol that in 2011 did not tell police of the missing boy for nearly a full day.

These surveillance cameras have self-contained recorders and through cellphones connections can be seen by police live so that if they are searching for someone they can see him in real time.

Police can track missing children, knock-out suspects, and hit-and-run cars almost instantly.

State Senate leader Dean Skelos approved the $1 million in taxpayer funds to pay for this camera surveillance system by the local company Security Watch 24. Why this community? It came down to initiative, political clout, and need.

Leiby Kletzky's father issued a statement that reads in part: "… these new cameras will help protect our community a little better."

For residents, it is a welcome addition to security. The surveillance system should be fully in place by spring 2014.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
