Preventing Colon Cancer : A Personal Story from FOX29’s Dave Kinchen

Posted: Updated:

You don't know much about life at 8-years-old, let alone death. I struggled to comprehend both at that age when my father, David Alexander Kinchen died from colorectal cancer.

He was…just 38-years-old.

I have a precious handful of memories with him. We went to car races together. I'd tag along with him to work in Downtown Chicago too.

Those were the good memories.

Unfortunately there are many others that involve my dad getting very skinny as the cancer destroyed his body. I saw him wasting away right before my eyes.

Those images stayed with me through the years as I got older. My dad was diagnosed with the disease around my current age. I'm 31. There was always a fear growing up that it could happen to me too.

Dr. Gregory Ginsberg and his staff at Penn Medicine and The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania helped me meet that fear head on, with a colonoscopy.

It's a critical test to check for and prevent colon cancer, but it's not always easy to sign up for it. Many people shy away.

I had the exam at HUP and what I learned from the results are vital to saving my own life.

Watch this video report and come along with me on my journey. What you learn here may save lives!

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
