Proton Therapy Offers Alternatives To Cancer Treatment At University Of Pennsylvania

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA, P.A. -

Proton Therapy at Penn Medicine has earned attention from its local advertising. Dr. James Metz from Penn Medicine talked to Mike and Sheinelle about the new cancer-treating paradigm.

The therapy delivers a dose of radiation to tumors in a different way and offers promising results in destroying the DNA of cancer cells.

Normal radiation treatments go into the body and out the body. A proton beam, explains Penn Medicine Doctor James Metz, hits the tumor and stops at the target. It is less damaging to surrounding tissues and is reported to have fewer side effects and complications. Most recipients also receive 50-70% less radiation.

The one drawback for the therapy, according to Dr. Metz, is that it is difficult to administer on moving targets. For example, a tumor on the heart is much harder to shoot a proton beam into because a heart is beating and moving the tumor.

Dr. Metz envisions the therapy being combined with other treatments for different individuals.

Penn Medicine is the fifth institution to adopt Proton Therapy, and it is currently the largest and most advanced institution to utilize the new technology. Watch the segment above to hear more about the procedure and why it's innovative.
