Snowed-In Car Threatened With Tow

Posted: Updated:
Bloomfield, New Jersey (MY9NJ) - In the past few weeks, New Jersey has been bombarded with more snow than anything seen in recent memory. Mountains of snow currently blanket side streets with cars and trucks lodged in between the piles. As humble citizens, it's our obligation to the community to shovel cars and sidewalks, but what if you’re physically not able to do so and the town wants to tow your vehicle? That's exactly the case with one woman from Bloomfield, New Jersey.

After a complaint filed by a neighbor to Bloomfield Police, Angela Ohanian was confronted by the city about her snowed-in vehicle. Currently most towns in the state have temporarily lifted parking regulations, due to snow removal, but Bloomfield has not.

The town established their Parking authority in 2004 and has a town-wide ordinance of no parking in the same spot for more than 48 hours in a row. Bloomfield Police Department Sgt. Anthony Servedio explained that this ordinance is set in stone.

“No exceptions for cars that are snowed in,” he said.

Currently, Angela’s vehicle is encased in three feet of ice on all sides with little possibility for her to shovel it herself. Angela, who currently walks with a cane and is the primary caretaker to her husband with cancer, talked about her current issue dealing with the snow.

"Well I’m gonna have to try and get somebody to shovel me out because I certainly can’t do it. He said if I don't move it in 48 hours, it gets towed," Angela said.

This story has a happy ending however. After constant calls to the city for help, Bloomfield police finally agreed to help Angela shovel out her car. The ironic part about this whole situation is that even if the town did not agree to help Angela shovel out her car, they would still need to shovel it out in order for them to tow it away.

This situation just goes to show that no matter what, as a community, we all need to give a helping hand to our neighbors, especially if they are unable to do it themselves.

There are countless treasures to be found along the Long Beach Island shoreline. Sand dollars, conch shells and even ten thousand year-old arrowheads! That's exactly what happened last week to 10-year old Noah Cordle who was walking along the beach and stumbled over the ancient artifact. “I thought it was a mussel shell, but it looked kind of too pointy to be a mussel shell and so I picked it up and it was an arrowhead,” Cordle explained.

They have spent the last year-and-a-half rebuilding the home and raising it five-feet in order to meet the new FEMA flood standards. Unfortunately, the couple is still without power. After the Uhlig's rebuilt, they sent in all the necessary paperwork to the township for approval.
