A 2-year-old girl died in a fire at the Village Oaks Apartments at 3550 East Overton Road in Dallas.
Six people were inside when the fire started just before 7 am Sunday.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, they reported lots of fire coming from the second floor of a 2-story apartment building. It took roughly half an hour to put out the fire.
Six people were inside the apartment when the fire started. Three were able to make it out safely. An elderly woman and an 18-month old child were taken to a local hospital, but their conditions have not been released.
Neighbors quickly took action when they awoke to screams coming from a burning apartment. Delein Walden and a few other residents backed a truck up to a window to try and rescue the children. "Another guy got on top of the car and I stood on top of him actually reached into the window and felt around the bed and felt one child, pulled one child out, I felt around the bed to see if I felt anybody else in the building and there was no one else," said Walden.
Dallas Fire-Rescue told FOX 4 the 2-year-old child was found in an area where the flames were intense and there was no way to rescue her.
After the scene was cleared, one of the three people who made it out of the apartment was taken to a hospital for symptoms related to smoke exposure.
Eight apartment units were affected by the fire.
A number of residents were displaced, and are being helped by the American Red Cross. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
