Cancer Fighter Dies In Car Crash

Posted: Updated:

After more than 14 years of fighting cancer, an Auburn teen dies in a car crash, leaving a community in heart break.

Kobe battled cancer with the only weapons he had: a smile, a fierce heart, and a will to live.

"Definitely a fighter, he wanted to keep up with the other kids. He wanted to be like everybody else," said Jim Hand, the principal of Auburn Middle School.

On his locker sits the words, "Never give up."

"Kids were definitely there 100% for him," said Hand. One recent morning, Hand had to tell his kids what happened. The Lewiston-Auburn Sun Journal reports that Kobe's father was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Several of Kobe's friends wrote him messages.

"Kobe you will be missed by everyone," wrote his friend Alec.

Kobe was also an honorary teammate at the Bates College Baseball team.

"We really wanted him to feel like he's a Bates Bobcat," said Mike Leonard, the head baseball coach, Bates College. "We certainly wished we got to spend more time with Kobe."

"We'll definitely hold him in our hearts through the season, throughout the rest of my career here as well," comments Connor Reenstierna, a pitcher for Bates College Baseball.
