Save Me Steve: Discounts

DALLAS -

You may be missing out on hundreds in discounts. FOX consumer reporter Steve Noviello says it's time to start cashing in.

Student Discounts

Whether you're in high school, college or maybe an educator yourself, many companies will extend a better than retail deal to you. In most cases all you need is a .edu email address to sign up. So how good are the savings? Right now the student deals from Best Buy include $150 off the sale price of a new MacBook.

Corporate Discounts

What about folks who are not in school? Many corporations offer discounts too. Pay a visit to your HR department and ask about any discounts you may get as an employee of your company. The idea here is buying power. Large companies who sell something can appreciate the power of your large company and all of its employees who want to buy something. From diamonds to car rentals to books and plane tickets, all of it is regularly offered at discount for employees of a large company.

Travel Bundles

If you're booking travel online, especially to places like Las Vegas, always price hotel and air together. Bottom line: Hotels want to get you in their casinos and are willing to discount their rate to do it. You could save hundreds in a single trip.

Next Purchase Coupons

If you're more the type to shop online at home consider this, how many times do you make a purchase from a new website just to receive a "thank you for your new business" coupon the very next day? You've already bought what you need. Instead of buying more, try this strategy. Buy only part of what you need (the cheaper part preferably) and see if that triggers one of those "thank you" coupons. When it does, use the discount to buy the rest of what you originally intended, as opposed to being lured back by the discount to buy a bunch of stuff you don't need.
