Police Arrest Two Teens For Mercer County Death

Posted: Updated:
MERCER COUNTY, N.J. -

Police have made two arrests in the beating death of a teenager who was killed while walking home from the grocery store.

The Mercer County Prosecutor announced the arrests of two 18-year-old suspects today. They say local businesses allowed them access to their surveillance cameras and that video along with witnesses helped them make the arrests.

My heart is better now that the people are in jail," said Artemio Perez, a family friend.

Michael Holman and Dante Martin charged with the murder of 19-year-old Julio Cesar Cruz Cruz.

Family and friends of Cruz Cruz gathered at his home today. They tell us he had been living in the U.S. for 6 weeks after arriving from Guatemala and shared a recent photo taken when he saw snow for the first time in his life.

They say since the arrests they can now begin the healing process

"These two individuals preyed on an 18-year-old immigrant that was here for 45 days," said Joseph L.Bocchini Jr Mercer County Prosecutor.

Bocchini says surveillance video and witnesses helped nab the suspects. Police say on February 15 just before 7pm, Cruz Cruz was returning home to his house on Rusling Street with groceries in his arms when the men approached him. The suspects threw him to the ground. He hit his head on the concrete sidewalk and died. Both men now face 30 years to life if convicted of a crime the prosecutor says was senseless.

"Their desire to take from that human being caused the death of Mr. Cruz Cruz So as we proceed forward there will be little sympathy from this office for these individuals," Bocchini said.

Cruz Cruz's brother tells us his body is being sent back to Guatemala for burial. He also expressed his gratitude to the county prosecutor and police for their hard work in this case.

Police are thanking the public for their assistance in finding McLean.
