Student Creates New Website To Help College Students Renting Properties

Posted: Updated:

Every day we hear about Landlords and Tenants, and usually the news isn't always good! But, as FOX 29's Chris Murphy explains, a new website may help change this, especially when it comes to college students!

Students were making noise about something that could help them. In need of a place to live, 22-year-old, James Fuhrman, decided to go online to checkout a website that clearly had him in mind.

"I thought ... what if students could rate their landlords," Fuhrman said.

He had a vision for a site that other students coming in behind them could see what they could expect even before they sign a lease.

And thus, Whose Your was born!

The brainchild of a Temple University Business School graduate, the site allows students to share the good, the bad and the ugly about their landlords, and the properties in which they live.

"I dealt with landlords who were bad about giving back money. Landlords who at the end, try to tack on extra fees... Try to actually have us pay for things that were actually damaged prior to being there," Furhman said.

And these are just a few of the things, WYL lets would-be renters' know.

Advertising major, Hillary Radish, thinks it's a brilliant idea!

"It's like rate your professor, but for your house! That's how we get to classes and see which professors we want to take... it's the same concept," Raddish said, "We're more likely to be honest about it. Rather than the actual realtors who kind of sugarcoat it a little bit."

So far, 25 schools are included on the website.

Since its inception about a year ago, WYL has had more than 16,000 visitors and some 62,000 page views.

And it's not just the students paying attention to the feedback, but property owners as well!

A new staff was brought in to run The group owns about 50 residences on or near, Temple University's Main Campus.

Danielle Redenbacher, new leasing manager at Off-Campus Philly, says their objective going forward is simple."

"Just to do right by the kids and let them know that this is a new day. We're going to be here for them and it's going to be great next year," Redenbacher said.

This is good news to students.

"I would recommend Whose Your Landlord to anyone because this is real feedback. This is not something you feel like a landlord paid for. You can tell this was made by a person who was recently a student," Furhman said.
