Philadelphia Residents Scramble To Find Snow Supplies

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH PHILADELPHIA -

In preparation for the coming storm, people are on a quest for salt and other supplies.

But there's one problem, almost everyone is out of ice melt.

The Lowe's in South Philadelphia has no salt and if you call the Home Depot down the street, they answer the phone immediately telling you they're out too.

Instead employee's are recommending using sand and Damp-Rid to act as a replacement.

"Stuck with this," said on customer.

Most people in South Philly looking for rock salt are stuck with plan B.

There seems to be a shortage of ice melt everywhere.

"Weeks ago, in fact, I drove from Philadelphia down to DC and couldn't find a single bag of salt anywhere in between," Richard McCouch said.

McCouch eventually found some in Haverford, but only has one bag left, so he picked up 50 pounds of sand.

That and Damp-Rid are the best Lowe's has to offer right now.

"Damp-Rid is actually pure calcium chloride. It's great for melting ice. Now for traction you do need a little bit of play sand. The only downside of play sand is it gets messy after the ice goes away," Lowe's Assistant Manager Kevin Devillava said.

Others had similar luck looking for other winter supplies.

"I've been to Walmart, been to Target, been to Home Depot, now I'm here at Lowe's, and no space heaters in all of Philly. Is that amazing or what?" Donny White asked.

White from Nashville, known as Uncle Donny, needed a space heater for his tour bus.

They didn't have the right size at Lowe's but Uncle Donny kept trying, lining up a deal with this customer inside the store.

"Do you want to sell it? Somebody really needs it," that customer said.

The sale didn't work out despite his best efforts.

"You know I sure appreciate you trying though, you got a good heart," White told him.

Henry Chhour had to make a quick trip to the hardware store after breaking two of his shovels this winter.

"I went in there for a snow blower too and they didn't have one of those either, so I decided to just get a shovel," he said.

The store does have plenty of generators in stock.

Despite his wife's pleas, Chhour doesn't want to buy one.

Fox 29's Drew Dickman said, "You realize that if the power goes out you're going to have to hear the I told you so."

"I'll deal with it if that happens," Chhour replied, laughing.

Because of the price and size of the Damp-Rid, employees estimate its 10 times more expensive than a regular bag of salt.

They also recommend having batteries, a flashlight and bottled water on hand in case of a power outage.
