Police warn of South Side robberies

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Police are warning about robberies that have occurred on the South Side throughout February.

In the incidents, offenders have approached victims and announced robberies while displaying a chrome steel handgun, according to a community alert from Grand Crossing District police. The crimes have occurred between the 6100 and 6400 blocks of South Calumet and South Cottage Grove avenues.

One offender is described as a 5-foot-10, 175-pound man in his mid-30's with a dark complexion, according to the alert. The others, of which there are an unknown number, are described as black males between 15 and 19 years old who are between 5-foot-9 and 5-foot-11.

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity, remember unique physical characteristics of suspects and to avoid displaying expensive items.
