Cops: Phone scam targeting Polish-speakers in Chicago Lawn

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Police are warning residents in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood about recent phone scams targeting elderly Polish-speaking residents.

In the incidents, a female offender calls elderly, Polish-speaking victims using a blocked phone number and says she is a relative involved in a crash needing bond money, according to an alert issued by Chicago Lawn District police.

If victims agree to provide money, the offender says she will send a private attorney to retrieve the funds. A male offender acting as a private attorney then goes to the victim's home to accept the money, the alert said.

The male offender is described as a white male between 50 and 59 years old. Police are not able to describe the woman. Both offenders speak fluent Polish, the alert said.

Incidents have occurred at the following times and locations:

• 6000 block of South Melvina Avenue on Feb. 3 about 9 a.m.

• 5400 block of South Meade Avenue on Feb. 5 about 12:30 p.m.

• 4000 block of West 58th Street on Feb. 27 about 3 p.m.

Anyone with information should contact Area Central detectives at (312) 747-8382.
