GARY, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A person was found dead inside a burning Cadillac Escalade SUV early Saturday in northwest Indiana.

Firefighters extinguishing the vehicle fire found the body inside around 4 a.m. Saturday in the 1200 block of New Jersey Street in Gary, Gary police Cpl. Gabrielle King said.

The Escalade was parked at the home of the man who owned the luxury SUV. But the man found inside the vehicle has not been identified because of the extensive burns to his body, the Post-Tribune is reporting.

Authorities say they believe the occupant was the homeowner, but will wait for DNA testing to confirm the man's name.

Police are conducting a death investigation while they await autopsy results from the Lake County Coroner's office, police Sgt. Dan Callahan said.

The Lake County Coroner's office confirmed the death and said the body was a male, but the office was not releasing the name or age Monday.

Police have consulted with ATF agents regarding the cause of the car fire.
