SMU basketball up to No. 18 in new AP Top 25 poll

Posted: Updated:

SMU basketball is ranked No. 18 in the new Associated Press Top 25 poll out Monday, SMU's highest ranking in decades.

The Mustangs defeated the University of Central Florida on Saturday, 70-55, their only game of the past week. That win, plus numerous losses by teams ahead of them in the poll, moved SMU up five spots from last week's No. 23 ranking.

SMU is also now ranked No. 18 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, up from No. 24 last week.

SMU is considered a lock to make its first NCAA tournament appearance since 1993. Now it's all about playing for a higher seed in the tournament.

Five teams in SMU's conference, the American Athletic Conference, are ranked in this week's Top 25. Louisville is No. 11, Cincinnati No. 15, SMU No. 18, UCONN No. 19 and Memphis No. 20.

SMU has two games left in the regular season – March 5 vs No. 11 Louisville and March 8 at No. 20 Memphis. The home finale has been sold out for weeks, with tickets going for more than double on the secondary market.
