IHSA: Curie cleared to play in state playoffs

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Curie Metropolitan High School will not get their city championship back, but the team will be able to compete in the state tournament.

The Illinois High School Association made the decision Monday. Nine players are eligible, but three are not.

Chicago Public School student athletes are asked to maintain a 2.0 GPA, whereas the IHSA requires players to pass 5 courses and achieve a minimum of 2.5 credits prior to the tournament.

Last week the team was stripped of its city championship and its winning season after it was discovered that seven players were academically ineligible.

Curie's campus was still buzzing about it, Monday.

"It's fair because they didn't pay attention to their grades. They can't get mad, it's kind of their fault," said senior, Joseph Rodriguez.

"It was kind of unfair for everybody because the team has worked hard," sophomore, Yororia Pranch added.

The decision to take away their title and still make state is an unprecedented one, said Chicago Sun Times Prep Sports Editor, Michael O'Brien.

"Well, it's historic to have an 0 and 25 team as the number one seed for sure and they lost the city title which they're not going to get back. But, they do have a chance in the state now and their best player, Cliff Alexander is reportedly going to play," O'Brien added.

The IHSA said it is not able to release the names of the nine who will play.

The situation has many debating who should be blamed.

"CPS just has to follow their own rules. The coaches are supposed to exchange eligibility sheets before the game, which lists all of the players that are eligible. Well, that is something they have not been doing, " O'Brien said.

The nine players that are able to play are set to tomorrow night at King High School.

The IHSA says the remaining three will be allowed to travel with the team, but cannot dress in uniform or sit on the bench.
