NJ portion of Palisades Parkway in dire need of help

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

The New York portion of the Palisades Interstate Parkway the road is drivable. But when your car hits the New Jersey side, prepare for a jolt. Potholes are so bad that some refuse drive here. And officials say there is not much they can do about it.

In a season of bad potholes, the 11-mile stretch of the Palisades from the George Washington Bridge to the New York border has the distinction of being among the worst.

New York's Department of Transportation repaved the New York portion of the Palisades years ago. But New Jersey laid down new road almost two decades ago.

The Palisades Interstate Park Commission, a bi-state agency, maintains the road. Commission President James Hall said that New Jersey paid for repairs 18 years ago. But the New Jersey Department of Transportation told Fox 5, "It's not our roadway and financially we are not on a position to be helping the commission."

New potholes are opening faster than the commission can fill them. Now some New Jersey lawmakers are working on legislation that will eventually find a funding source, such as the state's Transportation Trust Fund

New Jersey Assemblyman Gordon Johnson told Fox 5 that lawmakers hope to have "a fix in or some ideas for a fix in relatively soon."

The head of the commission said a temporary solution is reducing the speed limit here.
