A West Bloomfield man was told he needs bypass surgery because of his blocked arteries, but instead of going under the knife he made a last-minute decision to change his diet. Now, he feels like a new man.

Paul Chatlin, 56, began waking up in the morning with chest pain. He ended up at the Cleveland Clinic where an angiogram discovered several blocked arteries.

As he was contemplating bypass surgery he got a call from Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, an internationally known Cleveland Clinic surgeon.

"He's trying to explain how he could stop and reverse my heart disease through nutrition. I was scared and I was open to any possibility," says Chatlin.

In his book, "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease", Dr. Esselstyn says with a very restrictive diet you can not just prevent heart disease but also reverse it.

Chatlin came home and started cleaning out his fridge.

"All the meats, dairy were gone, all the nuts were gone," Chatlin remembers.

The Esselstyn diet calls for no meat, no dairy, no oil and no nuts. Chatlin eats fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

"This is not an easy diet, I'm going to let you know. It's not even a diet; it's a nutrition plan - change," Chatlin says.

Cardiologist Joel Kahn admits some heart patients need surgery, but with a doctor's supervision he says science proves food can be medicine.

"From 1990 on there's been published medical data that says we can reverse heart disease; we can prove it by addressing with this type particular diet plan," says Kahn.

It's too soon to tell what this diet has done for Chatlin's blocked arteries, but within months of starting it he knows his chest pain has disappeared.

"I lost 40 45 pounds, and started feeling myself again," he says.

Dr. Kahn and Chatlin have now started a vegan support group for heart disease patients. They both know sometimes you need help and encouragement to follow a plant-based diet
