Chicago Police are warning Northwest Side residents of an ongoing scam in which seniors are targeted for money by telling them relatives are in jail.
Over the past few months, several residents have been victimized by con men who trick seniors into thinking that a family member has been arrested and they need to send money to bail them out, according to the alert.
The alert advises residents that Chicago Police do not call people or show up at homes asking for bail money. A person out can only be bailed out at the police station where they are in custody, and it cannot be done over the phone.
Victims of the scam should report it to 911 or the community policing office at (312) 742-4521.
