Residents jump to safety as fire destroys Detroit apartment building

DETROIT (WJBK) -- A fire gutted an apartment complex early Wednesday on Detroit's west side, forcing dozens of people out of their homes, including many who jumped from windows on the second and third floors.

Detroit Fire Commissioner Jonathan Jackson says the fire started shortly after 6 a.m. on the north side of Jason Manor Apartments, located near Interstate 96.

Jackson says four people were transported to hospitals with injuries believed to be from jumping.

Jackson praised firefighters, who he says rescued 25 people in all. "This could have been a lot worse," said Jackson.

Police were called to the building earlier to deal with a disturbance at a party, Jackson said, and police were investigating whether that was related to the fire.

The cause of the fire wasn't immediately known, but sources tell FOX 2 it was started in multiple locations, signaling possible arson.

Police spokesman Rodney Johnson said that when officers arrived shortly after 3 a.m., a woman reported being sexually assaulted and was taken to a hospital. He said she was visiting someone in the building but didn't know the person who allegedly assaulted her.

FOX 2's Roop Raj says several resident remain unaccounted for, but fire officials say they could have escaped on their own and left the scene. Investigators will continue their search throughout the afternoon.
