PHOENIX -

Phoenix police say a robbery suspect shot and killed himself while barricaded inside a home near 43rd Avenue and Glendale on Wednesday.

Lt. James Holmes says a 27-year-old suspect robbed a Subway near Bell and Tatum just before 5 a.m.

Afterward, he went to a Walmart where he found a taxi to take him home. Holmes says that taxi driver called police.

When officers arrived, Holmes says officers got two men inside the home to come outside and give them information.

Phoenix police surrounded the home after the suspect refused to come out.

Holmes says the suspect wasn't cooperative and had access to weapons inside the home.

After being barricaded inside for about six hours, police say the suspect shot and killed himself.

Some neighbors nearby were ordered to stay in their homes, others were evacuated to ensure their safety during the incident.

Dozens of officers were on scene working to get the suspect out.
