Pope Francis: Women could have bigger role in Church

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

In an interview Pope Francis had with two newspapers, Corriere della Sera in Italy and La Nacion in Argentina, he said that women could have greater-decision making power in the church's hierarchy.

The possibility of the pope assigning women to senior positions in the Vatican bureaucracy has been raised by some Vatican experts. That includes, perhaps, appointing women as the head of powerful departments in the Vatican.

However, the pope said that women could have even a larger role than that. A Senior Cardinal is talking with female experts trying to decide how to inflict any changes.

"Women must have a greater presence in the decision-making areas of the church," Pope Francis said. "But I would call this a 'functional' promotion. That won't take us very far."

Some church leaders suggested making women deacons, who help during Mass and perform other duties.
