CORPORATE CASUAL: Target ditches professional dress rule

Posted: Updated:

Everyone has heard the cliché that you should dress for the job you want, not the job you have -- but Target is putting the expectation of professional dress aside in favor of a more relaxed approach.

Although the move won't really change corporate culture, it will change the way the culture works -- and employees aren't complaining.

In the past, a tie or sport coat was required for men and jeans were off-limits for women, but the policy that went into effect on Tuesday gives broad discretion to employees when deciding what to wear. In fact, they can live casual Friday whenever it's appropriate under the new policy called "Dress for Your Day."

Target says they made the decision to give employees more flexibility and choices when it comes to their wardrobe options as well as making the company more competitive when it comes to recruiting new talent.

"The word on the street is that Target is a very buttoned-up, straight-laced, traditional company," Cali Ressler, a productivity consultant, told Fox 9 News.

According to Ressler, a casual workplace might portray a more relaxed image, but she cautions that corporate culture won't change just by changing how it looks.

"Right now, they're in a traditional work structure where it's 8-5 in your chair, in the office building where they're treated like children," Ressler said. "Wearing jeans isn't going to help that."

So far, however, employees say it has seemed to improve morale.
