PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Officers and detectives shared their insight into Detective Hobbs, the hero detective who despite being shot continued fighting to protect his partner.

"Everything that you want to say about John Hobbs is true, he was a great officer," said Lt. Sal Freni.

They worked with Det. John Hobbs every day catching dangerous fugitives. Six members of the major offender bureau broke their silence Thursday.

"John was a great cop because he was a great man. John was a great cop because he was a great husband and father," said Det. Cory Geffre.

After 21 years on the force, Hobbs won the distinguished service award for arresting a wanted fugitive named Angel Padilla who was accused of shooting at an officer 37 times.

"I think he embodied everything it is to be a police officer and what that badge stands for, and he upheld that until the day he died," said Sgt. Bob Knapp.

And on the day Hobbs died he talked about getting his income tax refund to Lt.. Freni, "He said well I'm going to take my wife out either for a special dinner by ourselves without the kids or a special weekend. He goes I haven't determined yet, I said well that will be fun, he said it will be I love her to death".

Lt. Freni commended the actions of Hobbs who despite being mortally wounded fought to protect his fellow officers. "He took a mortal wound. The bullet penetrated his heart and from a down position on his side he was able to put shots on target to stop the suspect... He spoke all the way to the hospital and fought for another hour in the emergency room for his life" said Freni.

"There is no way that man was going to stand by and let that knucklehead run into a building and take somebody hostage or shoot somebody else. So what he did is he stood there and he died fighting," said Det. Geffre.
