Boston schools to replace free condoms after backlash over wrappers

Posted: Updated:

Boston Public Schools are replacing free condoms offered at their high schools after wrappers on the contraceptives caused some concern.

Parents raised questions about what they describe as sexually suggestive messages and images on the wrappers. One reportedly said, "one lucky lady," while another said "tasty one."

Nurse, former Boston School Committee Member and parent Helen Dajer said, "Anything that says 'hump' and 'bite' and 'big cannon', I found tremendously offensive to me as a mother."

And Dajer's not alone. The offensive condoms left Boston Public Schools looking for answers.

Spokesman Lee McGuire is glad parents like Dajer spoke up telling FOX 25, "We absolutely agree with them and the parents are right and we're glad they came to us."

But how these condoms got into the hands of Boston teens is the real question. A new program just put into place passes out condoms to high school teens whose parents give the OK. The Department of Public Health donated 40,000 condoms and Boston Public Schools were happy to accept.

But someone forgot to check these condoms and that has Mayor Marty Walsh upset too.

"I don't have the answer but I'll get to the bottom of that," Walsh said.

The company that supplies the condoms is called Global Protection Corporation. They said that DPH has ordered the same condoms before but they are geared toward adults.

President Davin Wedel said, "They order directly from third party."

He went on to say that they have been ordering them for many years.

DPH is pointing the finger of blame to the group receiving them saying they should check them before handing them out. In this case that means Boston Public Schools. Their spokesman says that it was a very unfortunate oversight.

"And we did not pay enough attention to the labeling on the materials themselves and that's something we want to make sure doesn't happen again," he said.

Boston Public Schools has already taken steps to replace the free condoms with more generic wrappers.
