Counterfeit health products seized on Long Island

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Authorities on Long Island have busted a counterfeit goods operation, but we're not talking counterfeit clothes on Canal Street. These are items you put on and in your body. Even the district attorney said the items looked so real, they could have fooled her.

On the outside, a certain Long Island building in Oceanside may look as plain as day. Inside, investigators say, was an elaborate counterfeiting operation. Only Fox 5 was there as investigators confiscated fake health products such as Vicks Vapo rub and feminine hygiene products.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice on Friday displayed some of the millions of dollars' worth of fake products seized. The products are labeled Vaseline, Chapstick, baby oil, and lotion. She also displayed the unregulated chemicals used to make the fakes.

A Pfizer official say counterfeiters often focus solely on labeling.

Items were manufactured at in the building without any government oversight whatsoever and sold at stores up and down the East Coast. Valley Stream fire officials discovered the operation during a building inspection.

Investigators raided five Long Island locations and arrested two brothers. Investigators still don't know if their employees or distributors knew the items were counterfeit.

Its unknown right now just how many stores and customers were affected or what these ingredients are.

Investigators say you should try to buy health products at larger chain stores and look at the expiration date. And if the price is too good to be true, it probably is.
