Sisters reunited after three decades, thanks to social media

Two Volusia County women have been reunited after 30 years apart, thanks to Facebook and a special "search angel."

As children, sisters Jessica and Cherry were close.

"I remember running around and playing hide and seek with her," said Jessica.

But the sisters were suddenly separated when Cherry was given up for adoption.  Then last year, tired of wondering what happened to Cherry, Jessica decided to try something she had seen before on Facebook.

"I'd seen other people doing crazy things, putting info on posters, and it worked.  I kind of followed their story and saw that they were finding people, so I prayed about it for sure and felt like it was a great idea."

Jessica created a Facebook page with a picture of Cherry as a child and included all of the information she knew about her missing sibling: her full name, Cherry Virginia Kuhn and that she was born deaf at Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach on May 22, 1983.

Finally, last week, Jessica received a web link from a woman she has never met, her "search angel," as she calls her.  With that link came the answers she was hoping to find.

"As soon as I went to the link, I saw her picture and her son and info about her.  I instantly got chills and knew it was her," recalls Jessica.

It turns out that Cherry also received a message from the "search angel" and sent Jessica a message a few days prior, but Jessica had not seen the message.

Since Saturday, Jessica and Cherry have been emailing and texting and finding out how much they still have in common, even after all these years.   They both enjoy photography and even got engaged one day apart.

"Her  fiancé proposed to her on February 21st, and I got mine on the 22nd," Jessica says.  "And [the rings] are almost exactly alike."

Jessica has had additional success stories through Internet searches.  She found her biological father and three half-siblings through social media.

She says her faith and her love for her family kept her going and she encourages others who are searching to do the same.

"Don't give up! There's a reason why things happen, and you know, don't give up!"

Jessica and  Cherry are set to meet face to face this weekend for the first time since reconnecting online.
