SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

On February 25th, 39 year-old Mario Valenzuela was shot outside a Phoenix apartment complex. Valenzuela was shot by the same man Phoenix Police say shot at their detectives Monday killing Detective John Hobbs. On Saturday family and friends of Valenzuela gathered to raise money for his family with a cut-a-thon at a Scottsdale Salon.

Phoenix Police say on the 25th, William Ray Thorton shot 39 year-old Valenzuela. For eight days Valenzuela fought for his life in the hospital but sadly died.

Thorton also shot at Phoenix Police Detectives on Monday who were trying to track him down in connection with the murder of Valenzuela.

During the gun battle Det. Hobbs and his partner A.J. Casados were shot. Hobbs died at the hospital a short time later and Casados is recovering at home.

On Saturday Hype Salon in Scottsdale held a cut-a-thon to benefit Valenzuela's family. "We're like family and you become very close with each other, so when something happens to one of us, it impacts all of us," said Rocio Rios.

One of the employees at Hype Salon is related to Valenzuela and the owner Rocio Rios said this is there way to help out the family in a time of need.

"We try to help out as much as we can offering any assistance when they're suffering a time of loss, and help them focus on their family and what's really important because it's hard at a time like this," said Rios.

The Scottsdale Salon planned to cut hair until 7 p.m. with proceeds going to Valenzuela's family. If you want to make a donation you can go to either location in Mesa or Scottsdale.
