Karen Apple used to work in technical sales for IBM, but she took early retirement to enjoy more of her life, like riding her Harley with her husband and volunteering.
Her family has a culture of volunteer service, starting with her parents and extending to her husband.
In only six years, Apple has logged 3,800 volunteer hours at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas.
The Southlake resident says it's worth making that long drive twice a week. She gives out fun stickers to patients while escorting them and their parents in the hospital to the doctor or therapy.
Apple also accepts donations at the front desk, serves in the volunteer executive committee and chairs the silent auction committee for the fundraising holiday bazaar.
Apple said it's rewarding to not only help the young patients get to their appointments, but to see them make such great progress year after year.
