FOX Viewers Help Find Owners Of Surrendered Dog

Posted: Updated:

From Christina Gonzalez:

"I can't believe it, it's overwhelming" The shaky voice of a man over the phone. He and his wife contacted the dog rescue  Leave No Paws Behind, when they saw the Fox 11 story featuring their dog, Otto. The elderly dog had been left, wrapped up in a blanket, inside a basket, at the Baldwin Park animal shelter. The unsigned note with him said he belonged to an elderly couple, who'd had him all his life. Otto was sick, and they no longer had money to care for him, or to put him to sleep.

"My wife was in tears, as she left him, saying I am sorry, I am sorry" continues the voice on the phone. At that point, they did not know that the animals shelter would call the rescue 'Leave No Paws Behind' (LNPB) which would make sure the dog got help.

The rescue deals with elderly dogs abandoned in shelters, and they are finding that more and more senior animals are being surrendered by senior humans, who can no longer afford their care.

"We are retired, I am disabled, and my wife is not well"goes on the voice on the phone, " We live week to week, and can't even afford our medical bills. We can't even go to the dentist any more, we have no money"

"It breaks your heart" says Toby Wisneski, founder of LNPB. She want these people to know that if they are a good loving family, she can help them get the necessary medical assistance so they don't have to leave older dogs in shelters. She has promised Otto's owners, the rescue will help them financially, with whatever they need with Otto, so he can go back and live the rest of his life with the owners he's known and loved all his life.

"It's unreal" says the voice on the phone, explaining that the story has gone viral on the web, which they never expected. "It's God's work" he adds, "To let people know that there is help out there!"

Over the weekend, FOX 11 News told you about an older, ill Chihuahua left at a Los Angeles city shelter, in a basket, with a note saying the owners are elderly and poor and can't afford to take care of their beloved pet. The owners tell our Christina Gonzales that they love their dog Otto, but they also are sick and don't have the money to go to the doctor themselves.

Otto was taken in by Leave No Paws Behind and taken to the East Valley Veterinary Clinic, which is now treating the dog. The founder of Leave No Paws Behind, Toby Wisneski, that more and more elderly people are facing the same situation: they can't afford the medical bills for their pets. During Christina's visit, she saw five more dogs that were abandoned by their owners for the same reason.

Christina will have more on the story on Studio 11 LA at 5p and on Fox 11 News at 10p.
