Is tech to blame for the shutdown of a Chicago photography store?

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

At a time when "selfie" scored word of the year and people are taking more digital snapshots than ever before, camera and photo supply retailer Calumet Photographic Inc. has shuttered all of its U.S. stores after filing for bankruptcy protection.

"After 75 years of business it is with a heavy heart that we announce our immediate closing in the United States (our European stores will continue)," the company said Thursday morning on its Facebook page. "It has been a joy to share our passion for photography with you all of these years. We'll miss each other and we'll miss all of our customers. Thank you for everything,"

On Thursday night, customers were greeted with notices announcing Calumet Photo's closure after more than 70 years of business.

"Commercial photography is just about gone. Everybody is using cell phones, so it's gone totally," said Adam Kozik, a book illustrator.

Long-time customer Adam Kozik believes the booming digital age led to the demise of Calumet Photo and other photofinishing stores.

"In 1970 this town was booming with photography. Sears hired so many photographers in this town for the toasters for the microwave. Now it's gone. People would rather take a cell phone and shoot a picture or something and get maybe a one dimensional picture rather than depth in a photograph," said Kozik.

It's all about convenience and instant access.

A reported 90% of people have only taken photos on a camera phone versus a camera but, a manager at Calumet Photo told FOX 32's Tisha Lewis, technology is not to blame for its closure.

The team at Central Camera Company in the Chicago Loop agree - they're still going strong, since 1889 and believe there's still a niche for old school photography.

In the meantime, Vidal Moran was supposed to pick up equipment at Calumet Photo for a school project.

"I didn't get any call or anything. I just came today and saw a note on the door," said Moran.

No one answered the phone at the company's Chicago store. Calumet Photo's website was not available Wednesday morning.
