Midwesterner invades New York armed with Chicago-style pizza

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

As Americans, we live in one nation, we save and spend one currency and we (mostly) have to follow the same set of rules, but geographically the United State is huge and while globalism equalizes many things, some very deep cultural rifts still exist in this country.

"What about the Chicago deep dish?" I asked Sal's co-owner and pizza chef Enzo Triolo.

He looked at me like I'd insulted his mother.

"No," he said. "No."

For the last 35 years, Enzo's tossed the dough, spread the sauce and sprinkled the cheese at Sal's in Little Italy. At Sal's, the crust is thin, the slices fold and the reviews rave.

But while Enzo, his brother Francesco and the pie-eaters at Sal's rested on their lightly sauced laurels, Thursday, a 31-year-old from the Midwest served up slices of pizza blasphemy in SoHo.

"We got a new mayor," Emmett's owner Emmett Burke said. "He eats with a knife and a fork. This is the way pizza's going."

The deep dish pizza was invented in Chicago. The deep dish pizza at Emmett's was invented in Emmett's apartment.

"I mean, it's the best pizza," Emmett said.

This extra saucy young man from the Second City's suburbs opened Emmett's four months ago after hatching his evil plot in college. So far, he's succeeded in brainwashing his customers:

"I wish I could fold the slice but aside from that it's very tasty," one man from New York said.

"Amazing," a female NYU senior from Ohio said. "It's really, really great."

But Burke faces a greater challenge in crustier New York-style purists.

"It's not real New York style pizza," Enzo said.

"The little pizza," a tourist from Naples said of his preference. "Not the big pizza because it's not pizza."

"I'm here to prove a lot of them wrong," Emmett said.

But while Emmett seeks to usurp some power from the crispy, cheesy, bubbling wonder that is a slice of New York style pizza, he stops short of full-blown revolution.

"I eat thin crust all the time," Emmett says. "I had it for lunch today. I eat pizza all the time. If it's not here [at Emmett's], it's somewhere else."

Police say the 6' 5" attacker started a conversation with a 47-year-old man in the area of 74th St. and East Drive. He then put the victim in a chokehold, dropped him to the ground and stole his bag.
