The Many Sides Of Bullying

Posted: Updated:
Watchung, New Jersey (My9NJ) - New Jersey’s Anti-bullying laws are known as the strictest in the nation and a group of teens from Watchung Regional High School recently opened up about their experiences being bullied.

One senior who emigrated with her parents from Egypt in 2003 explained how, even though she was just four when 9/11 happened, she’s still been called a terrorist by other kids at school. She says her mom had to sit down and explain to her what happened on 9/11 and why kids would say something so horrible to her.

“It didn’t just happen when I was younger, it didn’t stop right away. It actually even happens now in high school, sometimes it occurs,” she explained.

But there are many sides to bullying and some of these kids may have unintentionally be bullies themselves.

One freshman talked about how one time she was giving a girl a piggyback ride at summer camp and told the girl that she was heavy. The girl she was carrying ended up being hurt by that.

“I had no malicious intent going into this. I definitely did contribute to this but I didn’t think. I sort of did this as a fleeting thing ya know, something just to get her entertainment or her attention. And I think it’s so important you have to think before you say anything about anybody else,” she explained.

One of the important guidelines in New Jersey that would constitute someone being bullied is whether or not there was “malicious intent”. If it’s decided that a student had malicious intent, then they can get suspended or expelled for bullying at all New Jersey schools.

At Watchung Regional High School, they have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to bullying.
