Canning’s Body Language Tells Its Own Story

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) - As the Rachel Canning story continues to develop, we still haven’t heard from the teen about how she’s handling this whole situation.

While many have speculated about Rachel’s mood, actions and behavior both in and out of the court house, no one really knows for sure. So, in an attempt to get a better understanding of how the young-lady is feeling, body language expert Julie Theroux chimed in to discuss the impressions that Rachel’s movements are giving out.

“A couple of key things really jumped out at me. Number one, she demonstrates the body language of a very defiant teenager…There were certain things that she did in court that were involuntary, such as the teenager eye-roll. At one point the judge said ‘when you grow up and become an adult, you may change your mind,’ while she rolled her eyes, because as a teenager you think that things are very black and white. The other thing that she does is she puffs up her chest, she looks angry and she covers her mouth a lot. The one thing that concerned me about this is that she’s surrounded by people who are talking for her and the fact that she’s covering her mouth so much makes me wonder if she’s really being manipulated,” she explained.

So the question remains, is Rachel Canning the victim or the antagonist? Theroux explains more about why she feels like Rachel is the one being influenced.

“What gives me that impression is the way her attorney acts in court, the way she’s surrounded by others when she’s walking into the court room and walking out. Now, they may think that this is moral support, but if you take a look at the overall picture, and especially the body language—she covers her mouth, she’s not allowed to talk…she covers her mouth with both fists, and it’s interesting because her mother will cover her mouth at the same time, so it’s like the two of them really want to talk to each other, but they’re not being allowed to or for some reason at this point they can’t. So to me when I was reading her body language, she had a lot of pent up frustration. She acted like she was mad, not only at what’s going on with the parents, but the fact that she doesn’t feel like she’s in control,” Theroux said.
