Students Rather Be A Slave Than A Factory Worker

Posted: Updated:

A history lesson on Civil War turns into a lesson one middle school student will never forget.

Kaya James, 13, is an 8th grader at Novi Middle School in Michigan.

During a lesson on The Civil War and The Industrial Revolution, her teacher apparently asked students if they would rather be a slave or a factory worker.

The teacher then asked the students to write an essay on their choice in class.

James says she was disappointed when she learned the majority of her class, including African American students, chose to be a slave. She decided to take the issue up with her mother.

James explains, "I was disappointed because what slaves went through is really humongous and for them to say they would rather be a slave is really disappointing."

"What it suggests to me as a district, we need to do a better job of helping our students understand the devastating impacts of slavery back in the 1800s, says Novi Community Schools Superintendent, Steve Matthews.

The question has since been removed from the lesson and the school's superintendent says he's looking into the issue.
