Dallas County girl who died from flu didn't get flu shot

Posted: Updated:

The only child to die from flu this season in Dallas County will be buried on Saturday.

Kiara Scott, 8, started feeling bad on Feb. 19 according to her family and was hospitalized just two days later at Medical City Children's Hospital.

The flu eventually became pneumonia and Scott died on March 8. Scott didn't get a flu shot.

"We didn't take it that seriously and we should have," said grandmother Rosemary Phill.

Scott had battled health issues from a young age, having open heart surgery as a baby and she only had one lung. But Phill said Scott had recovered and been healthy after the procedure and hadn't been sick recently until she got the flu.

"She was a beautiful child," said Phill. "She had this infectious smile – she would bat her eyebrows and everybody would love her."

Phill said Scott loved to sing and dance. Her family will remember the young girl at a funeral service on Saturday.

A fund has been set up at First Convenience Bank to help the family with funeral expenses.
