Police seek 2 suspects in armed restaurant robbery near Hopkins schools

Posted: Updated:
MINNETONKA, Minn. (KMSP) -

Minnetonka and Plymouth police forces are searching for 2 suspects in an armed robbery at a Tex-Mex restaurant and bar near two Hopkins schools Monday morning.

General manager Ali Mishkee was running errands when the said two masked gunmen entered through the back door of the Lone Spur Grill and Bar at 11032 Cedar Lake Road shortly before 10 a.m., an hour before the restaurant was set to open.

"It was a random act, it just happened," Mishkee said.

The gunmen ordered 4 employees inside to the floor and tried to break into the safe but none of the employees knew the combination, so the suspects stole employees' cell phones, wallets and keys before running off.

"Obviously they were there for money. They didn't get much. The safe was locked. They couldn't get access to it. They just trashed the place and left," Mishkee said.

Mishkee said the back door usually isn't locked before business hours so the restaurant can receive deliveries.

"I don't think they had any animosity towards us," he added. "They just picked a quiet place and in a quiet neighborhood not a lot of foot traffic."

The restaurant was eventually able to open for one of the busiest days of the year -- corned beef and cabbage on the menu for St. Patrick's Day.

"It's unfortunate it happened. It's fortunate no one got hurt. It's fortunate we're all in one piece," Mishkee said.

The restaurant is about a half mile from Hopkins High School and a quarter mile from North Junior High School.

When it comes to drag racing, rocket-type speed is the name of the game -- but that also means things can go wrong very quickly, and a double crash at a Brainerd, Minn., track is another grim reminder.
