Large pothole slows traffic on I-75 in Detroit

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (WJBK) -- Road crews are taking a closer look at a giant pothole along southbound I-75 near the Rouge River Bridge.

SkyFOX flew over the scene Wednesday afternoon showing several lanes of blocked traffic.

FOX 2's Erika Erickson was at the scene and says crews have closed two lanes of traffic to begin repairs. The lanes have now been re-opened.

Crews cleaned up debris and poured new concrete.

Spokesperson for MDOT Diane Cross says the repair is just a "temporary fix, like what pothole patching in the winter is. These are just temporary bandaids we're putting on these potholes that we have on our roadways. We really need the surgery. We need long-term funding."

Cross says money for salting, plowing and pothole patching is being taken from counties' summer budget now. That's money for trash clean up, tree trimming and actually fixing potholes. Cross doubts the money coming from the state will be enough.
