Spring comes to Navy Pier with annual Flower and Garden Show

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Spring is in full swing at Navy Pier for the last weekend of the Chicago Flower and Garden Show. Good Day Chicago got a peek inside.

More than ever the Chicago Flower and Garden Show helps gardeners learn how to do beautiful things at home. Due to the winter we've had, visitors are more than ready for spring.

They get to enjoy 26 designer gardens where the flowers and trees are in full bloom at Navy Pier, offering hope that the outdoors will eventually look like this. Trends in outdoor gardening include high-tech fire pits and tall waterfalls, safely enhanced with colored lights. Water garden ponds are a big attraction.

The Chicago Park District is displaying azaleas that are descendants from flowers displayed at the Chicago World's Fair of 1893. More than 50 varieties of tulips are in bloom, a sure sign that spring will arrive.

"We can hear people actually sigh at the front door, you can smell hyacinths, the mulch, the cherry blossoms," show director Tony Abruscato told FOX 32 News. "There's a sense of relief as they walk through the door.

"We steeped the show in education, you can ask why aren't my bushes working, when should i cut back my plants, and they are getting the answers at the show," Abruscato said.

The Chicago Hyacinth made its debut at this year's show. The new flower is thicker, bigger, heartier and earns the Chicago name.

Chef Rodelio Aglibot, well-known for his work at Sunda, is opening a dim sum restaurant called Yum Cha. "The Food Buddha" is giving cooking talks at this year's flower show. He joined Good Day Chicago Friday morning to share his chicken dumpling recipe.

Chef Rodelio is also going to be talking about how we can "eat clean" by using "farm to table" ingredients when we prepare meals. We all have the ability to grow our own fresh, organic ingredients in our homes, like basil in a little flowerpot on your windowsill.

The Chicago Flower and Garden Show will be at Navy Pier through Sunday.
