Alert: IRS phone scam thieves have already stolen $1 million

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A new scam is being called one of the largest phone fraud schemes the IRS has ever seen. Beware of fake agents calling and demanding you to pay up any unpaid taxes.

"I usually get my W2 back at the end of January, then I get my 1099 and 1098, and I file it as soon as I possibly can so it's a pretty painless process," said a female tax payer.

Tax time is usually the one thing most people put off doing.

"I actually think that getting it all together is the hardest part, and then once you get it together, you gotta make sure you fill out all the forms right," said a male tax payer.

The Internal Revenue Service said thieves are calling people on the phone and telling them they owe taxes. The victims are then told then need to wire money or pay with prepaid debit cards.

If they refuse to pay, victims are threatened with arrest, deportation or loss of business or their driver's license.

The thieves have already targeted 20,000 taxpayers and stolen more than $1 million.

The IRS says it never calls taxpayers asking for money and always sends out letters first warning people they owe money.

The Better Business Bureau's Steve Bernas joined FOX 32 News at Noon on Friday to share tips to keep us all safe from this IRS phone scam.

"They're not asking for credit card numbers now...[only] prepaid because they can't wait for the credit card company....and anybody that tells you we need money right away, that's the tip off to what we call the rip off," said Bernas.

Bernas said if you pick up the phone and the caller on the other line says they're with the IRS and you owe money, just hang up and call his office to report the scam.

"Iactually think that getting it all together is the hardest part, and then onceyou get it together, you gotta make sure you fill out all the formsright."
