Firefighters Sing Disney Song To Calm Child During Rescue

Posted: Updated:

It's the theme song to the hit Disney movie "Frozen" that every kid knows it by heart.

Including four and a half year old Kaelyn Kerr of Billerica and that's why these Reading firefighters were singing it.

They sang that song to little Kaelyn when she got stuck in this chairlift-type elevator with her mom and baby brother Jackson last Wednesday afternoon.

"I went to go push the door and nothing happened so that's when I was pushing the buttons and nothing happened," recalls Kristin Kerr.

The door was jammed inside 580 Main Street in Reading.

The shaft wasn't fully enclosed, so the only way out was up a ladder and over a wall.

She continues,"When they put the ladder down that's when she kind of started freaking out a little bit"

So firefighter John Keough, a dad of three, started talking about "Frozen" with Kaelyn and that triggered a thought for his partner Scott Myette.

Keough recalls,"before I could even get the first words out about Olaf and Elsa, Scott had his iPhone out and started to play some music and that immediately made things calm for her and before we knew it we were singing a chorus or two."

"I don't like to admit to it. [It] just stuck in your head, catchy tune," reveals Myette.

Joking aside though, these guys say they'll do whatever it takes to relax the tension in a rescue.

As dads of young kids themselves they didn't have to think too hard on this one.

Myette explains, "you say ok, how would my kids be comforted in this situation."

"It worked, we got her to a point where she was comfortable with us and up the ladder we went, right up and over, no problem" says Keough.
